Working with Me For Your Honour's Project

I will be happy to supervise nice projects done as Honour’s Project at Glasgow Caledonian University. My main research interests are:

supply chain security, smart grid security, cyber-physical security, security metrics, and network hardening.

Even if those topics are not interesting for you, I am still willing to supervise projects in different topics. In both cases, your project has to satisfy the following criteria:

  • Your project has to be a practical work. Cybersecurity is a large field and the field is open to both practical work and non-practical work. Your project has to include elements like: using tools, running simulations, or working with large amounts of data from credible sources. I am not able to accept projects which include: writing lots of text without any real practical work, interviewing people, writing text like a blog article (not scientific).
  • Your project should be good enough to be accepted in a Tier-3 Cybersecurity conference. At least that should be your goal. You can find the list of conferences from:

https://people.engr.tamu.edu/guofei/sec_conf_stat.htm

If you do a project which has that level of quality, I am going to work with you to make it a research paper.

  • From the time we agree on a Honour’s Project, you have to update me at least once a month. Even if you have small progress in your project that month, it is totally fine. I am here to guide you in the right direction.

Getting a Recommendation Letter From Me

If you came to the stage that you are looking for a job, you will need to provide references. Firstly, I wish all students the best in their job search. If you would like to give me as your reference for your applications, I can happily do that as long as you satisfy at least one of those criteria:

  • You took a class with me and you got at least 85 as the overall score or in at least one of the class components (theoretical exam, practical exam).
  • You did your Honour’s project with me and you got at least 75 for each gradable components of the project.

In addition to those criteria, here are criteria for which you have to satisfy all of them:

  • You attend my classes often so that at least I know you in person rather than just one student in class lists. Note that, I do not expect you to attend every class but you need to attend the majority of classes.
  • You are not involved in repeated anti-social behaviour (e.g., talking to your friends in class) during my classes.
  • You attend the majority of my classes on time. Late arrival a few times may be acceptable but should still be avoided. However, frequent late arrival is a sign of disrespect.

If you have those criteria, all you need to do is to send me an email to Onur.Duman@gcu.ac.uk that has the following information:

1. Where you would like to apply? This can be more than one place.

2. Your recent resume.

3. One page document listing your achievements.

4. Explanation of how you would like my reference to be sent (an email to someone, a letter prepared for you to send, etc…). If that reference just asks you to give my contact information to the place you are applying, you need to state that so that I keep myself alert for any emails or phone calls related to your applications.

I wish you all the best in your search for opportunities.

Working With Me For Master's or Ph.D

Currently, I do not have any openings to hire someone. However, you are welcome to come and do research under my supervision with your own funds.

For Master’s, you need to check Department’s website, apply directly to the Department, and state your interest in working with me.

For Ph.D, I will announce when I have fully-funded PhD positions. If you are ok with being a self-funded PhD student, just send me an email explaining what you would like to work on and why you would like to work with me.
